Etymology

This comes from obsolete Irish sidhe (now spelled sí), meaning "fairy mound" — a sense that appears in English only in the lowercase form sidhe. The sense meaning "fairies" or "a fairy", which appears in English both lowercase and capitalised, comes from a shortening of Irish aos sidhe (now spelled aos sí), "people of the fairy mound".
