Etymology

Perhaps passed down dialectally from Middle English songere, from Old English sangere, from Proto-Germanic *sangwārijaz (“singer”), the source too of German Sänger and Dutch zanger, among others. It is equivalent to song + -er, and may alternatively have been newly formed from these components.
