Etymology

Came into English via Middle English spedily and spedili, from Old English *spēdiġlīċe and ġespēdiġlīċe (“prosperously”), which can be broken down as speedy + -ly. It is cognate with Scots spedely and spedelie (“quickly, speedily”); compare also Old English spēdlīċe (“effectually, effectively, successfully, efficaciously, powerfully, in a manner which produces a result”).
