Etymology
Came into English as Middle English standynge, stondynge, standende, stondinde, standande or stondande, from Old English standende, stondende, from Proto-Germanic *standandz (“standing”), the present participle of Proto-Germanic *standaną (“to stand”). It is equivalent to stand + -ing.
