Etymology
Stirling was borrowed from Middle Scots Stirveling, from Early Scots Strivelin, Strivelyn, likely going back to Old Irish sreb, srib (“stream”) plus linn (“pool, lake”). It is cognate with Old French Estrivelin and Middle Welsh Ystriflin.
