Came from Middle English tode-stole, tadstol, taddestol, equivalent to toad plus stool. Compare dialectal English frogstool, meaning “toadstool”, Saterland Frisian Poagestoul, meaning “mushroom” (literally “frog's stool”), and Dutch paddenstoel.
