transmogrify

The origin and history of transmogrify.

Etymology

First recorded in the 17th century, its origin is uncertain, though it may come from transmigure or transmigrate. Another possibility is that the word derives from maugre, so that it originally meant the "evil eye", and later shifted, under the influence of these other etymologies, to its sense of "transformation". A further possibility is that it is a humorous blend of transfigure and modify.
