This word comes from Middle English tresse, from Old French tresce, whose origin is uncertain; it may derive from Vulgar Latin *trichia, from Ancient Greek τριχία (trikhía, “rope”), from θρίξ (thríx, “hair”). Compare French tresse and Italian treccia.
