Etymology

Comes from Middle English uprisen, which developed from Old English ūprīsan (“to rise up”), equivalent to up- + rise. It is cognate with Icelandic upprisa (“resurrection”) and Middle Low German oprīsinge (“uprising”). Compare also Icelandic uppreisn (“an uprising, revolt”).
