verdigris

The origin and history of verdigris.

Etymology

Came into English from Middle English vertegrece, verdegres, which came from Old French verte grez (literally "acidic green"), itself an alteration of the older verte de Grece (literally "green of Greece"). Modern French writes the word as vert-de-gris (literally "green of gray").
