Etymology
Came from Latin virgula (“twig; wand; scratch comma”), from virga (“branch; rod”) plus -ulus (“-ule: forming diminutives”). In the sense of a dowsing rod, it came via virgula divina or divinatoria. It is a doublet of virgule.
