Etymology
Inherited from Middle English Wyndelsore, which came from Old English Windlesōra (“Windsor”, literally “bank with a windlass, winch by the riverside”). This was formed from *windel (“reel, winch”; which gave Middle English windel, “reel, spool”) and ōra (“bank, shore”). See windlass.
