Etymology
Comes from Middle English witter, witer, which was of North Germanic origin, from Old Norse vitr (“wise, knowing”), from Proto-Germanic *witraz (“knowing”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (“to know”). It is cognate with Icelandic vitur (“wise”). See also wit, wis.
