Formed from year and -tide (“time, occasion”). Compare West Frisian jiertiid (“season”), Dutch jaartijd, jaargetijde (“season”), German Jahreszeit (“season”), Swedish årstid (“season”), Icelandic árstíð (“season”), and Yiddish יאָרצײַט (yortsayt). It is a piecewise doublet of yahrzeit.
