Etymology
Came into English via Middle English ea, eo, which developed from Old English ēa (“running water, water, stream, river”). That in turn goes back to Proto-West Germanic *ahu, from Proto-Germanic *ahwō (“waters, river”), and ultimately Proto-Indo-European *h₂ekʷeh₂ (“water, flowing water”). It is a doublet of aqua.
