coney

What does coney mean?

A natural-casing beef hot dog in a steamed bun, topped with an all-beef, no-bean chili sauce, yellow mustard and a heap of diced raw onion. Detroit eats them at 3am after the bars, usually at a 'coney island' — the local term for the diners that specialise in them (American and Lafayette being the legendary rivals downtown).

"Two coneys, fries, and a Vernors — same as always."

Origin

Brought to Detroit in the 1910s by Greek and Macedonian immigrants who'd passed through Coney Island, New York on arrival and named their hot-dog stands after it.
