crap hat
What does crap hat mean?
British Army insult lobbed by Paras and Royal Marines at anyone wearing a 'crap' coloured beret — i.e. not the maroon of the Parachute Regiment or the green of the Commandos/SF. If your beret isn't earned through P Company or the All Arms Commando Course, you're a hat. Often shortened to just 'hat'.
"Half the lads in the cookhouse were Paras taking the piss out of the craphats from the support regiment."
Origin
British Army, post-WWII. Maroon and green berets denote airborne and commando qualification; everyone else wears a 'crap' colour, hence the slur.
