fixing to
What does fixing to mean?
Southern construction meaning 'about to' or 'getting ready to.' Used constantly across the South and lifted wholesale into Southern rap — Memphis, Houston, Atlanta. Often slurred to 'fixin' to' or 'finna,' which is now its own national slang word.
Origin
Traced to the 1700s, from 'fix' meaning to set in order or intend. Dialect Society records use as early as 1716. Bled into Black Southern English and from there into hip-hop, where 'finna' became the dominant clipped form.
