futch

What does futch mean?

The sweet spot between femme and butch. A sapphic woman (or fem-leaning nonbinary person) who carries both energies at once, or flips between them depending on the day. Think soft and androgynous rather than fully one lane. Less a fence-sit, more a third option that owns itself.

"She's full femme at brunch and total futch by Friday night, flannel and all."

Origin

A blend of 'femme' and 'butch'. Circulating in queer women's circles since the early 1990s during the butch-femme revival. Got a mainstream bump when firefighter Dani Campbell used it on MTV's 'A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila' (2007) and claimed to have coined it, though it predated her by over a decade.

Frequently asked questions
