g-funk
What does g-funk mean?
Gangsta funk — the early-90s West Coast sound built on P-Funk samples, slow-rolling basslines, high-pitched synth leads (that whining 'whee-oo'), and laid-back drums. Dr. Dre's 'The Chronic' (1992) and Snoop's 'Doggystyle' (1993) are the blueprint. DJ Quik, Warren G, Nate Dogg all in the canon.
"Put a G-funk beat on and you can smell the convertible top going down."
Origin
Coined and codified by Dr. Dre, Warren G and the Death Row camp in early 1990s LA, drawing heavily on Parliament-Funkadelic.
