A simpleton — someone a bit slow, a bit gormless, standing there gawping. Old Black Country word, related to 'gawp' (to stare open-mouthed). Sits in the same family of softer regional insults as clarnet and saft 'aypoth — more 'bless him' than 'I hate him'.
