What does gilding mean?
The act of awarding paid Reddit Gold (or later Platinum) to a comment or post. Functioned as a flashy public tip — you were literally buying a stranger premium membership because their joke landed that hard. Reddit retired the Coins/Awards system in 2023, so the term is now mostly nostalgic.

Origin
From Reddit's Reddit Gold premium award, launched 2010. To 'gild' a comment was to spend a few dollars attaching the gold icon and a month of premium membership to it.
