slasher
What does slasher mean?
Hospital nickname for a surgeon — because the job is, fundamentally, cutting people open. Used affectionately by other surgeons and a bit less affectionately by physicians who think their colleagues across the corridor reach for the knife too fast. The flipside slang is 'fleas' for internal medicine doctors who 'argue with everything and never do anything'.
"Med reg won't budge — better get the slashers down to look at it."
Origin
Anglo-American hospital slang.
