What does spike mean?
A hit that sends the enemy hurtling downward. Land one while they're offstage and there's no recovering from it, they just get nailed into the blast zone below. The flashiest way to take a stock.

What's the difference between a spike and a meteor smash?
In Melee, a meteor smash can be cancelled with a well-timed jump (meteor cancel); a true spike can't. Casually, people often use 'spike' for both.
