third coast

What does third coast mean?

The hip-hop name for the Gulf Coast — Houston as the capital, with New Orleans, Memphis and the rest of Texas under the same flag. A claim that the South wasn't a side scene to East-vs-West but its own coast with its own sound: screwed-and-chopped, candy paint, slab culture, trill.

"Don't sleep on the Third Coast — we been running this since UGK dropped Ridin' Dirty."

Origin

Coined in Houston in the 1980s as Rap-A-Lot Records, the Geto Boys, DJ Screw and UGK built a regional sound that wasn't East or West. The Gulf Coast became the literal and figurative 'third coast'.
