What does wipe mean?
A total party kill. Everyone in the raid or dungeon group dies, the boss resets to full health, and you all run back from the graveyard to try again. The bread and butter of progression raiding.
"We wiped on the last boss six times before someone finally noticed the tank wasn't picking up adds."
Origin
MMORPG raiding culture, popularised by World of Warcraft. The group gets 'wiped out' in one go.

What's the difference between a wipe and a death?
A death is one player going down. A wipe is the entire group dying and the encounter resetting. One person can die and the group can still win; a wipe means everyone's back at the start.
