The word was probably inherited from Northern Middle English *berghgast, *barghgast, itself from bergh, bargh (“barrow”) plus gast (“ghost”). Some have suggested the first element is instead burgh (“town”) or bere (“bear”), but these alternatives lack semantic motivation.
