Etymology

This comes from Middle English forshapen, forschapen (“to transform”), which in turn goes back to Old English forsċieppan, forsċeppan (“to transform”), from Proto-West Germanic *fraskappjan, made up of for- + shape. It is related to German verschaffen (“to provide, supply, furnish”) and Swedish förskapa (“to cut out”).
