Etymology

This word comes from Middle English glisteren, which was either borrowed from or related to Middle Low German and/or Middle Dutch glisteren. Like many other Germanic words beginning gl- that relate to shining, it ultimately traces back to Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰley-.
