From Latin īnflīctiōnem (“imposition”), from īnflīctus, formed from in- and flīctus, the past participle of īnflīgō (“to knock or strike against”), itself from in- and flīgō (“strike”), whence also in-. By surface analysis it is inflict plus -ion.
