Etymology
Lotus is an unadapted borrowing from Latin lōtus, itself from Ancient Greek λωτός (lōtós); it is a doublet of lote, first recorded in the 1540s, and traces back ultimately to Hebrew לוֹט (lōṭ, "myrrh", literally "covering, envelope").
