Came from Byzantine Greek Μεθόδιος (Methódios), from Ancient Greek μέθοδος (méthodos), which came from μετ’ (met’, an apocopic form of μετά (metá)) and ὁδός (hodós). By surface analysis, it is formed from met-, -hod and -ius.
