From Latin nōnāgēnārius, meaning "containing ninety", plus -an, a suffix forming adjectives and representative nouns, either taken directly or by way of French nonagénaire, from nōnāgēnī, "ninety each", plus -ārius, "-ary", from nōnāginta, "nine tens, ninety".
