Etymology

Formed from phyto- and plankton, from Ancient Greek φυτόν (phutón, "plant") and πλαγκτόν (planktón), the neuter of πλαγκτός (planktós, "wandering"). Since these organisms are no longer classed as plants, the term now reflects an older meaning.
