Probably comes from Yiddish שנויץ (shnoyts, "snout"), which is cognate with German Schnauze ("snout, muzzle") and English snout. The Oxford English Dictionary suggests it may actually be pseudo-Yiddish, coined in English; it is attested since 1930.
