Came from Latin Sēricānus, formed from Sērica (“Serica, China, ancient northern China”) and -ānus (“-an”), from Ancient Greek Σηρικά (Sēriká), from σήρ (sḗr, “silkworm”), and possibly ultimately from Old Chinese 絲 (*sə, “silk”). It is equivalent to Serica plus -an, and a doublet of Seric.
