Traces back to Latin sexāgēnārius ("containing 60") with -an (forming adjectives and representative nouns) added, either directly or by way of French sexagénaire, from Latin sexāgēnus ("60 each") with -ārius ("-ary") added, from sexāgintā ("six tens, 60").
