Borrowed from Arabic سِنْدِبَاد (sindibād), from Middle Persian (compare Persian سندباد, sendbâd), possibly itself borrowed from Sanskrit सिद्धपथ (siddhapatha, "path of the Blessed"). According to folk etymology it instead comes from سند (send) plus باد (bâd), which also gave rise to the Arabic هِنْدِبَاد (hindibād).
