Etymology

Came into English from Anglo-Norman tysanne and Middle French ptisane, tisane, meaning “barley water, medicinal drink”, both ultimately from Latin tisana, a variant of ptisana, which came from Ancient Greek πτισάνη (ptisánē, “peeled barley, barley gruel”), itself from πτίσσειν (ptíssein, “to peel, to crush”).
