Etymology

Came into English from Middle English tithyng, which developed from Old English tēoþung or tēoðung, itself from tēoða, meaning “a tithe”, plus -ing (a suffix forming patronymics and diminutives), and from tēoþian, meaning “to tithe”, plus -ung (a suffix forming verbal nouns). Equivalent to tithe plus -ing.
