Unguent was borrowed from Latin unguentum (“ointment”), from unguō (“to smear with ointment”), which goes back to Proto-Indo-European *h₃engʷ- (“to salve, anoint”). Its cognates include Old Prussian anctan, Old High German ancho (German Anke (“butter”)) and Welsh ymenyn (“butter”).
