This word goes back to earlier forms unkembed and unkemmed, from Middle English unkempt (“uncombed”), equivalent to un- + kempt. Compare Old Norse úkembdr (“uncombed; unkempt”; whence Icelandic ókembdur), German ungekämmt (“unkempt”) and Dutch ongekamd. See also kemb.
