Came into English from Middle English aube, awbe, albe, abbe, which developed from Late Old English albe (later reinforced by Old French aube and Medieval Latin alba). This in turn was borrowed from Latin alba (as in tunica alba (“white tunic”), vestis alba (“white garment”)), the feminine form of albus (“white”). A doublet of alba.
