Came into English from Middle English bewepen or biwepen, which developed from Old English bewēpan (“to weep over, mourn, bewail”), itself from Proto-West Germanic *biwōpijan (“to weep over”), made up of be- and weep. It is cognate with Old Frisian biwēpa (“to beweep”) and Old Saxon biwōpian (“to beweep”).
