Came into English via Middle English foretokne, fortacne, from Old English foretācn, foretācen (“foretoken, presage, prognostic, prodigy, sign, wonder”), formed from fore- and token. It is cognate with Dutch voorteken, German Low German Vörteken and German Vorzeichen.
