Traces to Middle English hochepoche, a variant of hochepot, which came from Old French hochepot, itself from Middle Dutch hutspot (“beef or mutton cut into small pieces and mixed and boiled together in a pot”). That word combined hotsen, hutsen (“to shake; jog; jolt”) with pot (“pot”), equivalent to hotch plus pot. Compare German Low German Hüttspott (“hodgepodge”).
