Etymology

Came into English from Middle English kipe, kype, which developed from Old English cȳpe, cȳpa, meaning “basket”, from Proto-Germanic *kipǭ, *kippǭ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gey- (“to bend, twist”). It is related to Middle Low German kīpe (“basket”; giving German Low German Kiep, Kiepke, “basket”, and German Kiepe, “carrying basket”) and Norwegian kaup (“wooden box; crate”).
