Borrowed from Middle French Wallon (also wallon), which came from Frankish *walh, itself from Proto-Germanic *walhaz, meaning "foreigner". It is cognate with English Welsh and Wales, with the second part of Cornwall and the first part of walnut, and with Gaul and Wallachia.
