Traces back through Middle English worthely, wurthlich, to Old English weorþlīċ (“important, valuable, splendid, worthy, estimable, honorable, distinguished, exalted, fit, becoming”), and further to Proto-Germanic *werþalīkaz (“worthy”); it is equivalent to worth + -ly. It is cognate with Old Frisian werdelik, Old Saxon werthlīk, and Old High German werdlīh.
