From French loge (“arbor, covered walk-way”) from Frankish *laubijā (“shelter”). Akin to Old High German loub (“porch, gallery”) (German Laube (“bower, arbor”)), Old High German loub (“leaf, foliage”), Old English lēaf (“leaf, foliage”). Doublet of lobby, loggia, and lodge.
